January Photo-a-day Challenge

For fun this past month I joined a photo challenge created here by fatmumslim. For each day in January there was a specified topic for a photo, which you could interpret as literally or imaginatively as you like. The idea was to take a more or less spontaneous snap of whatever represents the topic for the day, play with edits or filters if you feel like it, and share it on some site.

All these were taken with my new, compact little Canon Ixus (see Day 31) that I got for Christmas and which lives inside my handbag (see Day 13!) ...

January 1. You

2. Breakfast

3. Something you Adore

4. Letterbox

5. Something you Wore

6. Makes you Smile

8. Your Sky

9. Daily Routine
Snapped in the nano-second before the tube door closed. Sometimes the most spontaneous of all produce interesting results!

10. Childhood

11. Where you Sleep

12. Close-Up

13. In your Bag

14. Something you're Reading

15. Happiness

16. Morning

17. Water
Manky bit of the Thames made to look more interesting than it is with some nifty filters.

18. Something you Bought
Lunch on my desk at work

19. Sweet

20. Someone you Love

Shot while driving in the rain. Don't try this at home, kids.

22. Your Shoes

23. Something Old

24. Guilty Pleasure
Tiny but wonderful French café round the corner from my workplace in north London, where I sometimes pop in for lunch or a coffee, happens to be called Le Péché Mignon (transl: guilty pleasure), and so it is indeed.

25. Something you Made

26. Colour

27. Lunch

28. Light

29. Inside your Fridge
Yikes! This was almost as hard as having to expose myself. You're getting both soft-focus and a Lomo-ish effect here.

30. Nature

31. You, Again

This was fun to do. I might do the February challenge - check it out here if you're interested in joining in.

  1. .. this was totally charming .. the challenge and your photos ... a back yard in London? ...

    1. Hi Karen in CT, thanks, and thanks for dropping by! 'Morning' and 'Close Up' were taken in my back yard, which is just outside of London.

  2. WOW!
    These are AMAZING!
what ia this Canon yr using?
    I gotta investigate
    Superb shots Karen!

  3. What a great idea - fabulous photos - I too love my Canon Ixus - we are inseparable. Francesca

    1. Thanks Francesca, interesting that you have the Ixus too. I always enjoy your photos.

  4. Is it the Canon Ixus 220?
I don't even think we have this one in the US...
    I'm dying here..
did you Photoshop these at all K.?
    mon dieu

    1. Hi Carol, it's the 230. And yes ... while some pics are au naturel, with many of them I played with editing and effects, as this was part of the fun of the challenge. So a lot of this is down to Picnik rather than the Canon!

  5. I like your commitment to this challenge Karen. 31+ photographs in one post - impressive! That would be just too much of a challenge for me as my machine can take an aching amount of time to load just one photograph.

    1. BB, have you tried down-sizing your photos before posting? This makes the upload much faster.

    2. I haven't Karen - but I will now. Thanks for the tip!

  6. Karen, these photos are terrific. It looks as if your unique eye and this new camera are destined for a powerful combination. I really look forward to seeing future posts.

    1. Thanks, Frances. It was a fun project to do, though some days a bit stressful to find something on the topic. It's apparently ongoing through the year, so I might do it again in a quieter month. I still love my SLR camera, but this is so much easier to carry around, so I will definitely use it more.

  7. I'm still amazed.
    Love these 'effects' you achieved
    Le Peche Mignon looks wonderful!!

  8. What an interesting post! Wonderful lively images, as always!!!!! And such an interesting subject. Well done, Karen!

Sorry for late commenting, but still somewhat frozen in here....waiting for milder weather. Have to catch up with the blogworld and the desk and...:) :)

  9. Almost any one of these challenges would have paralyzed me.
And here you did the whole 30 of them! And brilliantly.
    Leaving me bright green.
