Some things seem wrong

Some things just seem incongruous, at odds.

Like an African dog in the snow ...

My big boy, waking to London's first dusting of snow

Out of his element ... (what's this?) ... he does a little dance of joy.

Or a smiling baboon drinking coffee ...

He looked at me leaning out of the car window a couple of feet from him, seemed to smile, totally unconcerned by my presence, and carried on foraging in the dustbin ...

until he found his prize, the remains of coffee to go

and sat down comfortably on the grass to drink it

Baboons are harmless to people but have become a nuisance in some places in Cape Town, because their natural habitat has been invaded, and because thoughtless tourists feed them, thus giving them a taste for human (junk) food.

Cheers. Coffee break over.

Leaving London under a blanket of snow one freezing night and arriving next morning to 28 degrees dazzling sunshine is also incongruous, but seems quite alright on the other hand.

  1. Lovely fun post, Karen...still very cold here, but the snow has stopped falling...enjoy your holiday.

  2. Dear Karen, What wonderful shots of your Big Boy. He is a beautiful dog and so are your photographs. Our dogs love the snow. It makes even older dogs want to play in it.

  3. Aren't dogs simply the best creatures? Absolutely guileless. And, he looks so happy playing in the snow. Sending love, Karan...

  4. Karen, I've always liked the notion of incongruity. It gets the brains attention, unless occurring during dreams when we might embrace it.

It's wonderful to see that you are in a warm, even hot, part of the world. Winter has now settled in here in New York, and we are having a series of days that do not rise above freezing. No snow, just cold cold cold.

Thank you again for the introduction to Patrick Gale. I am now over half-way through Notes From an Exhibition and very much admiring his writing and ways of revealing family knowledge. One more thing we might talk about when next I am fortunate enough to see you again.

  5. What bliss for the dog to gambol in the snow!
Yes, sort of sad about the coffee drinking baboon.
    Brilliant photos as ever!

  6. Can you imagine such a sign in a London Park: Beware of Baboons!
It would have quite a different meaning.
I think Starbucks is missing a bit with this model manqué.

  7. Love how you transition from one world to the next seemlessly.
Yr hound is adorable in the snow...

  8. Lovely picture of Lucky and the Starbucks (Seattle?) drinking baboon. :)
